Men of Promise - San Gabriel Mission Parish

Seven years ago at Bible Study I met Dan and Charlie who invited me to attend a meeting of Men of Promise the following Saturday, I was undecided, but my wife encouraged me, and so I did. I was very pleased with the discussions and the brotherhood, and I’ve been attending ever since.

Every month, I look forward to attending our fellowship meeting and seeing the guys again, and I know that I will come out of the meeting with a strengthened faith and much food for thought. Our discussions and sharing of our different perspectives on the meaning of scripture in our present lives, sometimes confirm my interpretation and sometimes give me new ideas, new angles that I had not thought before but that now seem so clear.

The format of our meetings has been evolving as we have realized that the Holy Spirit leads our discussions to where we need to be that day. We used to plan ahead the topic of our discussion, but many times different topics arose that were more important at the time for our brothers, and so we found ourselves involved in the spontaneous topics and away from the original one. Now we start with our Opening Prayer, followed by the readings for the following Sunday, and then we discuss what these readings tell us today. From here we discuss our different views and sometimes branch into other subjects that are brought out by our brothers.

One thing that I love and feel that makes our fellowship more comfortable for everybody is that you are free to participate in whatever way you feel that day. If you feel like talking, you do so; and if you feel like just listening, that’s what you do. You may ask for clarification of some of your doubts or questions and/or you may provide your particular experience or views to help clarify the subject.

With such a diversified group, you will feel that whatever you went through or are going through now, somebody else has gone through the same or similar circumstances and will provide you with what has worked for him and may help you, too. We are at different stages on the road, but we all have the same goal: to walk with Christ and reach His Kingdom. Here you will find support and encouragement to continue the race and assist you when you fall so that you can go on to the end.

I invite you to come and share with us your faith and see for yourself if this fellowship is for you. We are not perfect–far from it–but we do strive to show our faith with our actions and behavior in our personal, family, and community lives.
